DIY E-Liquid

Additives

An additive does not make a recipe on its own: it adjusts a detail. This page currently has one product, the Menthol Extra DIY additive from extra DIY, at €3.90.

An additive is dosed in a small quantity into a mix already made up of a flavour concentrate and a PG/VG base, to add a sensation it does not have naturally, such as the freshness of menthol.

Highly concentrated, to be dosed drop by drop.
€3.90 a bottle.
Does not replace the flavour or the base.
Dosed into a ready mix, made with a flavour concentrate.

How do I use a DIY additive?

An additive is a very powerful concentrate that completes a DIY recipe without being its main ingredient: it is added in a small quantity to create a specific effect, here freshness.

What is the Menthol Extra DIY additive for?

The Menthol Extra DIY additive from extra DIY adds a feeling of freshness to a mix that does not have one naturally. It is used on a recipe already made up of a flavour concentrate and a PG/VG base, never on its own: by itself, it gives no fruit, dessert or tobacco taste, only freshness.

How do I dose an additive without making it too strong?

An additive is always dosed in a very small quantity, generally a few drops per 10ml of mix, adjusted to the intensity you want. The right method is to add the additive gradually, drop by drop, tasting the mix between each addition: it is easy to make up for too low a dose by adding one more drop, but impossible to take out too strong a dose once poured.

Which type of recipe should I add a menthol additive to?

A menthol additive works well on fruity or menthol recipes that lack freshness, like some of the icy recipes on the 30ml flavour concentrates page. On a recipe that is already very fresh, it is better to reduce the dose even further so as not to mask the other notes.

Common mistakes with an additive

The main mistake is dosing an additive like a classic flavour concentrate, pouring several millilitres at once: the result quickly becomes too sharp, even harsh on the throat with a menthol additive. The other trap is adding the additive before the base recipe has finished resting: it is better to let the flavour and base mix rest first, then adjust the additive just before vaping, once the profile of the mix has settled.

Do I need to let a mix rest after adding the additive?

An additive like menthol acts almost immediately, unlike a flavour concentrate, which often needs several days of rest. There is therefore no need to let the mix rest after adding it: the result can be judged by vaping straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I vape the Menthol Extra DIY additive neat?

No, an additive is never vaped neat: it must always be added in a small quantity to a mix already made up of a flavour concentrate and a PG/VG base.

Does the additive replace the nicotine shot?

No, an additive has nothing to do with nicotine strength. It is the nicotine shot that sets the nicotine strength of a recipe, the additive only affects the feeling of freshness.

How long does a bottle of additive last?

As it is dosed drop by drop, a bottle of additive generally lasts much longer than a bottle of flavour concentrate used at the same rate, since each recipe only needs a tiny amount.

Can I use this additive on a ready-to-vape e-liquid?

Yes, an additive can also adjust a ready-made e-liquid, not just a DIY mix, as long as you follow the same principle: a few drops, never the additive on its own.

Is the Menthol Extra DIY additive suitable for every recipe?

It is mostly suited to recipes that lack freshness, fruity or menthol ones. On a recipe that is already very flavourful or dessert-like, too large a dose risks masking the other notes of the flavour concentrate used.
